Sakhipur Upazila

Sakhipur Upazila (tangail district) with an area of 429.63 sq km, is bounded by ghatail upazila on the north, mirzapur upazila on the south, bhaluka, sreepur (Gazipur) and kaliakair upazilas on the east, kalihati and basail upazilas on the west. bangshi and Salda rivers are notable.

Sakhipur (Town) consists of four mouzas. The area of the town is 19.67 sq km. The town has a population of 23429; male 52.71%, female 47.29%. The literacy rate among the town people is 30.5%. 

Administration Sakhipur thana was established in 1976 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of six union parishads, 65 mouzas and 123 villages.

Population 220281; male 51.01%%, female 48.99%; Muslim 93.5%, Hindu 6.5%. Ethnic nationals: Mandai 111.

Main occupations Agriculture 67.56%, agricultural labourer 15.11%, wage labourer 2.17%, commerce 5.84%, service 2.68%, others 6.64%.

Land use Total cultivable land 26134 hectares, forest 17732, fallow land 345 hectares; single crop 40%, double crop 58% and treble crop land 2%; land under irrigation 75%.

Value of land The market value of the land of the first grade is Tk 8500 per 0.01 hectare.

Main crops Paddy, wheat, onion, brinjal and chilli.

Extinct and nearly extinct crops Sesame, linseed, jute arahar.

Main fruits  Mango, jackfruit, banana, papaya, berry, berry and watermelon.

Fisheries and, poultries Fishery 51, poultry 12.

Communication facilities Roads: pucca 21 km and mud road 1178 km.

Traditional transport palanquin, horse carriage and bullock cart. These means of transport are either extinct or nearly extinct.

Manufactories Flour mill 1, ice factory 5, saw mill 12 and Chira mill 2.

Cottage industries Weaving 360, goldsmith 25, blacksmith 60, bamboo work 107, wood work 350 and welding 10.

Main hats, bazars and fairs The most noted hats and bazars of the upazila are Kachua, Barachoana and Sakhipur; noted fairs are Falu Shah Mela and Muslim Dargah Mela.

Main exports Jackfruit, paddy, brinjal and banana.
