Nagarpur Upazila

Nagarpur Upazila (tangail district) with an area of 266.77 sq km, is bounded by tangail sadar and delduar upazilas on the north, daulatpur upazila (Manikganj) on the south, mirzapur, dhamrai and saturia upazilas on the east, chauhali and Daulatpur upazilas on the west. Main rivers are jamuna, dhaleshwari, Old Dhaleshwari, Lohajang and Noai.
Nagarpur (Town) has an area of 4.68 sq km. The town has a population of 10043; male 51.25%, female 48.75%; density of population is 2146 per sq km.

Administration The Nagarpur thana, now an upazila, was established in 1906. The upazila consists of 12 union parishads, 266 mouzas and 229 villages.
Archaeological heritage Tebaria mosque (built during the rein of the Mughal) and the building complex of Brindaban Chandra Bigraha.
Historical events In the anti British rebellion Dr. Akshay Kumar Guha (one of the founding doctors of the Mirzapur Kumidini Hospital), Dr. Nalini Mohan Chowdhury and others were imprisoned. In 1971 the Pakistan army established a military camp at the Jadunath Pilot High School. During the War of Liberation the Pakistan army looted the Baranagar village.

Religious institutions Mosque 279, temple 90; most noted are Salimabad mosque, Sadampara mosque and Goihata temple.
Population 238422; male 49%, female 51%; Muslim 91.09%, Hindu 8.89%, and others 0.02%.
Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 28%; male 34.6%, female 20.5%. Educational institutions: government college 1, non-government college 3, higher secondary school 28, secondary school 2, madrasa 123, government primary school 90, registered primary school 41, low cost primary school 16, non-government primary school 10. Noted educational institutions are Jadunath Pilot High School (1900), Nagarpur College (1966).
Cultural organisations Club 265, cinema hall 3, playground 14 and women cooperative society 13.
Main occupations Agriculture 46.68%, fishing 1.29%, agricultural labourer 19.08%, wage labourer 2.59%, handloom 1.06%, industry 1.77%, commerce 9.09%, service 9.43%, others 9.01%.
Land use Total cultivable land 22592 hectares; single crop 16%, double crop land 48% and treble crop land 36%.
Land control Among the peasants 17.55% are landless, 17.17% marginal, 46% small, 16.90% medium and 2.38% rich.
Value of land The market value of the land of the first grade is Tk 8500 per 0.01 hectare.
Main crops Paddy, jute, mustard seed, sugarcane and cauliflower.
Extinct and nearly extinct crops Sesame, linseed, kaun, sweet potato, china and kalai.
Main fruits Mango, jackfruit, banana, papaya, berry and kul.
Communication facilities Roads: pucca 20 km and mud road 223.73 km. The upazila has one ferry ghat.
Traditional transport Palanquin, horse carriage and bullock cart. These means of transport are either extinct or nearly extinct.
Cottage industries Goldsmith 150, blacksmith 100, potteries 80, wood works 700.
Hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars are 15, most noted of which are Salimabad, Nagarpur and Shahabatpur; fair 1 (Chaitra Sankranti Mela at Duajani)
Main exports Jute, paddy, sugarcane and banana.
NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are brac, proshika, buro tangail, asa, Saves and SDS.
Health centres Upazila health complex 1, family planning centre 12 and satellite clinic 6.
