Tangail Sadar Upazila

Tangail Sadar Upazila (tangail district) with an area of 334.26 sq km, is bounded by kalihati upazila on the north, nagarpur and delduar upazilas on the south, basail upazila on the east, belkuchi and chauhali upazilas on the west. Main rivers are jamuna, dhaleshwari and lohajang.
Tangail (Town) consists of 9 wards and 63 mahallas. The area of the town is 35.22 km. Tangail Municipality was established in 1887. It has a population of 128543; male 51.25%, female 48.75%. Density of population is 3650 per sq km.

Administration Tangail Sadar thana was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of one municipality, 11 union parishads, 256 mouzas and 276 villages.
Archaeological heritage Santosh zamindar bari (now Science, Technology and Islamic University), Karatia zamindar bari, mosque and tomb.

Madhupur Upazila (tangail district) with an area of 500.70 sq km, is bounded by jamalpur sadar upazila on the north, gopalpur and ghatail upazilas on the south, muktagachha and fulbaria upazilas on the east. sarishabari and gopalpur upazilas on west. Main rivers are Jhinai, bangshi, banar and atrai.
Madhupur (Town) consists of 9 wards and 22 mahallas. The area of the town is 14.36 sq km. The town has a population of 54706; male 59.79%, female 40.21%; density of population is 3810 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 37.1%.

Administration Madhupur thana, now an upazila, was established in 1898. The upazila consists of two municipalities (Madhupur and Dhanbari),18 wards, 47 mahallas, 10 union parishads, 242 mouzas and 343 villages. 

Historical events The wreckage of the Ananda Math (the office of the Sannyas movement) is located in Madhupur. Bankim Chandra wrote the novel Ananda Math after this. Madhupur forests were the shelter places for the members of the Fakir and Sannyas movements. During the War of Liberation in 1971 a battle was fought between the Muktibahini and the Pakistan army in which five persons including a Pak Captain were killed and seven wounded from both sides.
Population 375295; male 51.13%, female 48.87%; Muslim 89%, Hindu 7%, Christian 4% and others 0.31%. Ethnic nationals: Garo and Koch.

Main rivers are Jhinai, atrai and Bairan; main depressions are Helancha Beel, Barashila Beel and Gaila Beel.
Gopalpur (Town) consists of 9 wards and 35 mahallas. The Gopalpur municipality was established in 1974. It has an area of 23.12 sq km. The town has a population of 52131; male 50.72%, female 49.28%. The literacy rate among the town people is 40%. It has one dakbungalow.

Ghatail Upazila

Ghatail Upazila (tangail district) with an area of 451.30 sq km, is bounded by gopalpur and madhupur upazilas on the north, fulbaria and bhaluka upazilas on the east, kalihati and sakhipur upazilas on the south, bhuapur and Gopalpur upazilas on the west. Main rivers are bangshi, Jhenai, Lohajang, Salisundar. Noted hills are Deopara, Dhalapara and Sagardighi.
Ghatail (Town) consists of 9 wards and 15 mahallas. It has a population of 24328; male 43.17%, female 56.83%. Literacy rate among the town people is 42.4%.

Historical events During the War of Liberation a Pakistan military cargo carrying arms and ammunitions was captured by the Muktibahini under the leadership of Habibur Rahman (Bir Bikram). In the battle that followed 30 members of the Pakistan army were killed.

Kalihati Upazila

Kalihati Upazila (tangail district) with an area of 301.22 sq km, is bounded by bhuapur and ghatail upazilas on the north, basail and tangail sadar upazilas on the south, sakhipur upazila on the east, sirajganj sadar and belkuchi upazilas and the jamuna river, on the west. Main rivers of the upazila are Jamuna, Lohajang, Old Dhaleshwari, Bangshi, Nangal; depression 17, most of which noted are Charan, Baisha, Kumar and Talla Beels.
Kalihati (Town) consists of 9 wards and 17 mahallas. It has an area of 2.39 sq km. The town has a population of 29823; male 50.26%, female 49.74%. The literacy rate among the town people is 26.9%. The density of population is 12478 per sq km.

Delduar Upazila (tangail district) with an area of 184.54 sq is bounded by tangail sadar and basail upazilas, nagarpur upazila on the south, mirzapur upazila on the east, Nagarpur upazila and Tangail sadar upazilas on the west. Main rivers are Dhaleshwari, Lohajang and Elangjani.
Delduar (Town) consists of three mouzas with an area of 10.08 sq km. It has a population of 11833; male 50.01%, female 49.99%. The literacy rate among the town people is 31.7%.

Bhuapur Upazila

Bhuapur Upazila (tangail district) with an area of 225.2 sq km, is bounded by gopalpur and sarishabari upazilas on the north, kalihati upazila on the south, Kalihati, ghatail and Gopalpur upazilas on the east and jamuna river and sirajganj sadar on the west. Jamuna is the main river of the upazila.
Bhuapur (Town) a municipality, consist of 9 wards and 18 mahallas. It has an area of 3.30 sq km. The town has a population of 23705; male 50.22%, female 49.78%. The literacy rate among the town people is 51.9%.

Administration The Bhuapur thana, now an upazila, was established in 1974. The upazila has one municipality, six union parishads, 115 mouzas and 146 villages. 

Historical events During the war of liberation in 1971 the freedom fighters challenged a Pakistani ship carrying huge amount of arms and ammunitions at Sirajkandi and captured it. The freedom fighters later burnt the ship.

Basail Upazila

Basail Upazila (tangail district) with an area of 157.78 sq km, is bounded by kalihati upazila on the north, mirzapur and delduar upazilas on the south, sakhipur upazila on the east Delduar and tangail sadar upazilas on the west. Main rivers are bangshi and Lohajang. Notable beels are Chapra and Dubai.
Basail (Town) consist of one mouza. It has an area of 11.30 sq km. The town has a population of 11347; male 50.63%, female 49.37%; density of population is 1004 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 42.4%.

Administration Basail thana, now an upazila, was established in 1913. The upazila consists of six union parishads, 73 mouzas and 117 villages. 

Historical events A battle between Bangladesh freedom fighters and Pakistan army was fought at Kamutia on both banks of the Nat Khola River. In this battle some local people and quite a number of Pakistani soldiers were killed.

Mirzapur Upazila

Mirzapur Upazila (tangail district) with an area of 373.89 sq km, is bounded by sakhipur and basail upazilas on the north, kaliakair and dhamrai upazilas on the south, Kaliakair upazila on the east, delduar and nagarpur upazilas on the west. Main rivers are bangshi and Elangjani; the upazila has Salban (shoria forest).
Mirzapur (Town) consists of 9 wards and 16 mahallas. The area of the town is 13.81 sq km. The town has a population of 24219; male 48.81%, female 51.19%; density of population is 1704 per sq km.

Nagarpur Upazila (tangail district) with an area of 266.77 sq km, is bounded by tangail sadar and delduar upazilas on the north, daulatpur upazila (Manikganj) on the south, mirzapur, dhamrai and saturia upazilas on the east, chauhali and Daulatpur upazilas on the west. Main rivers are jamuna, dhaleshwari, Old Dhaleshwari, Lohajang and Noai.
Nagarpur (Town) has an area of 4.68 sq km. The town has a population of 10043; male 51.25%, female 48.75%; density of population is 2146 per sq km.

Administration The Nagarpur thana, now an upazila, was established in 1906. The upazila consists of 12 union parishads, 266 mouzas and 229 villages.
Archaeological heritage Tebaria mosque (built during the rein of the Mughal) and the building complex of Brindaban Chandra Bigraha.
Historical events In the anti British rebellion Dr. Akshay Kumar Guha (one of the founding doctors of the Mirzapur Kumidini Hospital), Dr. Nalini Mohan Chowdhury and others were imprisoned. In 1971 the Pakistan army established a military camp at the Jadunath Pilot High School. During the War of Liberation the Pakistan army looted the Baranagar village.

Sakhipur Upazila

Sakhipur Upazila (tangail district) with an area of 429.63 sq km, is bounded by ghatail upazila on the north, mirzapur upazila on the south, bhaluka, sreepur (Gazipur) and kaliakair upazilas on the east, kalihati and basail upazilas on the west. bangshi and Salda rivers are notable.
Sakhipur (Town) consists of four mouzas. The area of the town is 19.67 sq km. The town has a population of 23429; male 52.71%, female 47.29%. The literacy rate among the town people is 30.5%. 

Administration Sakhipur thana was established in 1976 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of six union parishads, 65 mouzas and 123 villages.
